No. 5 Florida State's Lead Too Much For Miami to Overcome

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s soccer team (6-6-0, 1-2-0) faced its third straight ranked opponent in the No. 5 Florida State Seminoles (10-1-0, 3-0-0), Sunday afternoon at the Seminole Soccer Complex, falling to the home team 4-1.

Florida State scored twice in a two-minute span in just the fourth and sixth minutes and the Hurricanes were never able to recover. The Seminoles’ Tiffany McCarty, the reigning NSCAA and ACC Player of the week, scored her 10th goal of the season in the 30th minute as FSU built a 3-0 lead

Florida State’s Tori Huster and Ines Jaurena scored the first two early goals for the hosts and as a team, FSU outshot the `Canes 10-5 in the opening frame.

Sophomore Julianne Rickers got Miami on the board with an unassisted blast from 30-yards out, just 40 seconds before the break. The goal was the second of the season for the Leesburg, Va. Native.

“I give credit to FSU for scoring early off a couple set pieces,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “Despite the early goals against us, I thought we played well and created quite a push in the second half.”

In her first match since setting the UM career shutout record (15), sophomore Vikki Alonzo made three saves on the day. Two Hurricanes fired multiple shots, Brittney Steinbruch with five and Beverly Goebel with three.

“We accept responsibility for the outcome and will respond in a positive manner,” added Taliaferro.

The Hurricanes will host ACC foe Clemson at Cobb Stadium, Friday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in their next match, as they look to even their conference record.
