CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The Miami Hurricanes continued to inch closer to the end of their preseason workouts with a single practice Sunday afternoon at the Greentree Practice Fields on the UM campus. The team worked out for more than two hours in the South Florida heat and enjoyed a productive session that encompassed all phases of the game.

“It was a tough practice, but a productive one,” UM head coach Larry Coker said. “We’ve got some bumps and bruises, some people out, but that’s common for this time of year. We’re making progress. I saw some encouraging things out of our offense today. And our defense has been impressive.”

In injury news, Miami received some bad news when it was learned that backup center Scott Puckett, a fifth-year senior, will be out indefinitely with an injury to his right knee. Puckett suffered a slight tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee last week. He will be evaluated again in three to four weeks and, at that point, a decision will be made as to whether he can return to action or surgery is required. Defensively, end Jamaal Green returned to action in a limited way after missing almost a week with a strained knee ligament.

The Hurricanes continue two-a-day practices with workouts Monday morning and afternoon at the Greentree Practice Fields. The morning session begins at 8:30 a.m. with the afternoon practice beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Miami begins the 2001 season on Saturday, September 1, at Penn State in a nationally televised contest (ABC Sports). Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
