Miami Rowing Finishes Fourth at the Eighth Annual ACC Rowing Championships

Clemson, S.C. -The University of Miami rowing team registered a fourth-place in the eighth annual Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championship Saturday on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.

The Hurricanes captured 25 total points to end the day, behind champion Virginia who totaled 60 points and runner-up Clemson with 46 points, followed by Duke who totaled 43 points. The Cavaliers swept all four races, and claimed their eighth ACC Championship.

Miami’s Varsity Four squad kicked off the race in the morning with a fourth-place finish. The UM crew of Jessica Cruz (Cox), Stacey Kerr, Julianne Parker, Sarah Stocks, and Rachel Sporko finished in a time of 8:00.9 behind Virginia, Clemson, and Duke.

“I was very impressed with how everything was set up and how all the teams interacted”, expressed freshman Stacey Kerr. “There was great camaraderie and I had a lot of fun racing here.”

The Varsity 8 also came in fourth place after crossing the finish line in a time of 6:40.2 ahead of Boston College and North Carolina, with crew members Meghan Leydecker (Cox), Laura Cordner, Sarah Conlon, Laura Coltman, Kelly Amsler, Caitlin Augustin, Emy Huntsman, Karen Wiley, and Natasha Lejer.

The Novice 8 boat finished sixth place with a time of 8:06.8, while the JV 8 crew finished fifth place at 6:55.6 ahead of North Carolina.

The Hurricanes placed two student-athletes on the 14-member All-ACC team. Senior Laura Coltman earned her second honor, while and sophomore Laura Cordner earned the honor for the first time of her career.

Senior Marenda Chamberlin stated, “The ACC’s is an excellent opportunity to see where our speed is right now and where we need to go from here.”

“It was a very well called race and we met all of our specified goals, making it a very positive experience”, commented first year Varsity 8 crew member Caitlin Augustin. “We are psyched for centrals!”

Miami will get back into action next weekend, when they head to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to compete against Alabama.
