Miami Remains Atop Coaches' Poll

Oct. 7, 2001

ESPN.com news services – Miami retained its position as the No. 1 team in the latest ESPN/USA Today coaches’ poll released Sunday, but just barely.

The Hurricanes (4-0) received the same number of first-place votes as in-state rival Florida (5-0) with 25. But Miami garnered four more total points, 1,449 to 1,445 to edge the Gators at the top spot.

Gaining on both teams is Oklahoma, which defeated previously No. 5-ranked Texas 14-3 on Saturday. The Sooners (5-0) remained at No. 3, but received 10 first-place votes and 1,397 total points to trail Miami by just 52.

Nebraska is No. 4, while Virginia Tech reached the top 5 with another impressive victory Saturday.

The remainder of the top 10: Oregon sixth, UCLA seventh, Washington eighth, South Carolina ninth and Fresno State, which lost its first-place vote, 10th.

The Longhorns (4-1) fell to No. 11 followed by Michigan, Florida State, Tennessee and Georgia Tech at No. 15. The Vols dropped in the poll by falling seven spots after losing 26-24 to Georgia.

Purdue is No. 16 ahead of Brigham Young, Clemson, Texas A&M and Maryland. The Terrapins jumped five spots to No. 20.

Kansas State (2-2) remains in the poll at No. 21. Stanford is next with Toledo, Northwestern, which plummeted eight spots, and Ohio State rounding out the top 25.
