March 12, 2011
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team made its spring match debut on Saturday, claiming all five sets from cross-town opponent FIU inside the James L. Knight Sports Complex on the campus of UM.
Under the direction of 10th-year head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch, the Hurricanes entered the spring having competed in consecutive NCAA Championships – 2009 and 2010. On Saturday, both head coaches from UMiami and FIU agreed to play five sets in the spring competition-opener for both clubs.
The match would be played as normal – the first four sets scoring to 25, and the fifth to 15.
In the sweep, the Hurricanes defeated the Panthers on scores of 25-18, 25-12, 25-22, 25-18 and 15-13.
The top performers for the Hurricanes included Lane Carico and Christine Williamson with double-digit kills. Carico led all performers for UM with 11, while Williamson added 10.
Junior middle blocker Ali Becker and sophomore Jenna Berkley each added nine kills at the net, as well as freshman Alexandria Johnson putting down nine kills from her outside hitter position.
The setter position was split between redshirt junior Katie Gallagher and sophomore Nrithya Sundararaman.
In blocking, the `Canes were paced by Williamson’s three, while teammates Becker and freshman Emani Sims combined for 5 kills. Becker had three (one assisted) and Sims staked two of her own – both solo performances.
Freshman libero Ryan Shaffer led all performers in the match in digs.
The `Canes will continue spring action on Saturday, March 26, when UM takes part in the UCF Tournament in Orlando. Times for the event have not yet been set.
