Miami No. 1 Again

NEW YORK (AP) – Miami has regained the top spot and there are four newcomers in the latest Associated Press college football poll, which was released Sunday afternoon.

The Hurricanes (5-0), ranked No. 1 in the preseason and again after the campaign’s initial week, are back in the lofty position based on their 49-27 rout of Florida State and then-No. 1 Florida’s 23-20 loss to Auburn.

Miami received 48 first-place votes and a total of 1,772 points from a nationwide panel of writers and broadcasters and holds a 33-point advantage over Oklahoma (6-0), which garnered 21 first-place nods.

Florida (5-1) dropped six spots to seventh and Florida State (3-2) tumbled seven notches to 21st.

Among the four new teams in the rankings, Washington State (6-0) enters in the highest position at No. 19 after an impressive 45-39 victory over then-No. 23 Stanford. Auburn (5-1) used its triumph over the Gators to move into the 20th slot.

No. 22 Northwestern (4-1) and 25th-ranked Toledo (5-0) are also among the nation’s elite this week.

Joining Stanford on the outside of the poll is Ohio State, Kansas State and Texas A&M.

Nebraska (7-0) received two-first place votes and is ranked third, while No. 4 UCLA (5-0) was given one. Rounding out the top 10 is Oregon (6-0), Virginia Tech (6-0), No. 8 Fresno State (6-0), Texas (5-1) and Michigan (5-1).

Tennessee (3-1) is ranked 11th and is followed by surprising Maryland (6-0), Clemson (4-1), Colorado (5-1), Washington (4-1), South Carolina (5-1), Georgia (4-1) and Brigham Young (6-0).

No. 23 Georgia Tech (4-2) and 24th-ranked Purdue (4-1) complete the rankings.
