Hurricanes Fall 1-0 in Double Overtime to No. 9 Wake Forest
Oct. 22, 2006
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – In a game that featured a total of 13 shots on goal with temperatures in the lower 90’s, Miami battled back-and-forth with ninth-ranked Wake Forest for over 105 minutes only to surrender a game-winning goal in the 106th minute of play in a 1-0 double-overtime heartbreaker.
With less than five minute remaining the second overtime, Wake Forest’s (13-4-0, 5-3-0 ACC) Keisha Garrick played a ball from nearly 40 yards out on the left side into the box where she found teammate Lindsey Jaco, who headed the pass into the left-side post past UM (7-8-1, 1-7-1 ACC) keeper Lauren McAdam for the game-winner.
Miami created several scoring opportunities throughout the afternoon and nearly broke the scoreless tie on two separate occasions.
Senior defender Kristen Chapman almost lit up the scoreboard in the 26th minute when she gathered under a corner kick from teammate Jessica Wyble and sent off a header towards the far post. With Demon Deacon keeper Laura Morse out of position a Wake Forest defender recovered and cleared the ball out of the net at the last moment.
In the first overtime sophomore midfielder Bryn Heinicke nearly ended the match with a shot from the right side of the box that sailed over Morse’s head only to hit the crossbar.
“I think we did a really good job of creating chances, but we just couldn’t capitalize,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “We had what I thought were three or four really good opportunities but couldn’t get things to go our way.”
The Hurricanes return to action Tuesday breaking from ACC play to take on in-state rival North Florida at 7 p.m.
