No. 14 Soccer Earns BIG EAST Win Over No. 18 Syracuse

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-Sophomore Allison McWhinney (Danvers, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal as the No. 14-ranked Miami soccer team beat No. 18 Syracuse, 4-2, for the first time ever Sunday afternoon at Cobb Stadium.
Miami improves to 1-0-0 in the BIG EAST and 6-1-0 overall, while the Orangewomen fall to 0-1-0 in the conference and 4-2-0 overall.
Freshman Britney Butcher (Bothell, Wash.) led the Miami attack scoring the first goal less than two minutes into the match. Senior Alexis MacKenzie (Plantation, Fla.), who leads the team with five assists on the season, assisted her on the goal.
The Hurricanes continued to dominate the first half as junior Lisa Gomez (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored on a pass from Vonda Matthews (Broken Arrow, Okla.) at 16:39, putting UM on top by two.
Syracuse came out strong the second half, scoring back-to-back goals to tie the match two-all. Nina Scalzo and Annie Turner scored at 62:32 and 80:29 for the Orangewomen.
Five minutes later McWhinney scored the unassisted game-winning goal for Miami at 85:12.
With less than one minute to play newcomer Gitana Gotay (Sandy, Utah) scored her first goal of the season on a pass from McWhinney.
The Hurricanes had 23 total shots, compared to 11 for Syracuse. UM took six corner kicks, while SU tallied two.
The Hurricanes return to conference action Friday night taking on No. 11 Connecticut at Cobb Stadium.
