No. 17 Soccer Takes On No. 11 UConn

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-The No. 17-ranked Miami soccer team will play host to No. 11 Connecticut Friday at 7 p.m. at Cobb Stadium.

The Hurricanes (6-1-0, 1-0-0) have the opportunity to go 2-0 in BIG EAST play for the first time ever in program history after downing No. 18 Syracuse 4-2 Sunday afternoon.

The Huskies (5-2-0, 2-0-0) have qualified for the NCAA Tournament 19 straight years. In 2000, they also captured the BIG EAST Northeast Division regular season title for the second straight year.

Miami was picked to finish fourth in the Northeast Division in the preseason, UM has surprised most by keeping pace with the Huskies atop the standings.

Miami currently leads the BIG EAST with 21 goals scored and is ranked second in the standings, one match behind UConn.

UConn handed Miami its worst loss in program history last season, beating UM 6-1 in Storrs, Conn. The Huskies also lead the all time series 2-0.

Another factor in the match, is UConn’s head coach Len Tsantiris will be looking for his 350th win on Friday, a feat only North Carolina’s Anson Dorrance has accomplished. No other coach in collegiate women’s soccer has even reached the 300-win mark.

Vonda Matthews (Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Laura West (Allen, Texas) continue to lead the Hurricanes with 11 points, including four goals and three assists a piece.

Forwards Jessica Gjertsen and Kristen Graczyk have really paced the Huskies in the first seven games of the season. Freshman Kristen Graczyk and sophomore transfer Jessica Gjertsen have combined for 11 of Connecticut’s 17 goals this season.
