Miami Rowing Concludes Fall Competition This Weekend

CORALGABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla. – The University of Miami rowing squad will conclude fall competition with two regattas this weekend. The Hurricanes will compete in the Florida Fall Regatta in Melbourne, Fla. on Saturday, November 12 and in the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Va. the following day. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Miami will compete in both the novice and varsity eight events at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association (FIRA) Fall Regatta. The regatta, which will be hosted by the Florida Institute of Technology, will take place on Canal 54.

“I am extremely excited about this year’s novice team,” said novice coach Andrea Saathoff. “They are working hard and are very enthusiastic about Saturday’s race. Because of Wilma, we are a little behind from where we were last year at this time, but I’m confident that we will do well and have a fantastic experience.”

A full varsity squad will be on hand at the Rivanna Romp held at the Rivanna Reservoir and hosted by the University of Virginia. Events will consist of eight, four and doubles competition. The regatta will open with the varsity eight at 11:00 a.m. followed by small boat competition at 12:00 p.m.

Also slated to participate are crews from Cincinnati, Clemson, North Carolina, Ohio State, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.

“After a strong performance in Chattanooga last weekend, the boats are rowing with more confidence,” said head coach Debra Morgan. “The Romp is a tough race, but we’re ready to go up to Charlottesville and perform well.”
