Soccer Registers 1-1 Tie at Virginia Tech
Oct. 4, 2007
Blacksburg, Va. – Freshman forward Brittney Steinbruch (Wyckoff, N.J.) netted her 12th goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough as the University of Miami women’s soccer team tied Virginia Tech, 1-1, in double overtime in the first conference road game for the Hurricanes.
Steinbruch, who earned NSCAA National Player of the Week, ACC Player of the Week, Soccer America Women’s Team of the Week and Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week recognition after leading the Hurricanes past NC State and North Carolina, moves into second place in the Miami record book in single-season goals with 12 and is just four shy of the school record.
With Miami’s program-record third tie of the season – and its first in ACC play, the Hurricanes move to 6-2-3 overall and 2-0-1 in the conference, while the Hokies are now 4-4-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the league. Virginia Tech remains unbeaten at home in 2007.
Steinbruch got the Hurricanes on the board in the 15th minute, with freshman Lauren Singer (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) on the assist. It was the team-high fifth assist of the year for Singer who is the second-leading scorer for the `Canes with seven goals and five assists for 19 points.
Miami remained aggressive and took the 1-0 advantage into the break. However, just 15 minutes into the second half, Virginia Tech’s Julian Johnson found Marika Gray, who netted her team-leading sixth goal of the year to knot the score at 1-all.
Despite the 20-12 advantage in shots, including the 10-7 advantage in shots on goal, the Hurricanes weren’t able to find the game winner. Senior Lauren McAdam (Simsbury, Conn.) recorded six saves in 110 minutes in goal for Miami, while Virginia Tech’s Ashley Owens finished with nine saves.
The Hurricanes continue their swing through the commonwealth with a Sunday afternoon contest at fourth-ranked Virginia. The Oct. 7 match will begin at 2 p.m.
