CORAL GABLES, Fla. – In an effort to raise money for the Howard County General Hospital’s Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center and the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the UM women’s soccer team will host the first annual KICKS Against Breast Cancer Tournament Saturday, April 16 at the Sunrise Hilton.

The five-team tournament featuring Miami, LSU, Marquette, Florida Atlantic and the U-18 Carmel United club team from Indiana, will showcase six 60-minute games Saturday at the soccer fields adjacent to the Sunrise Hilton. Admission to the entire day’s events is just $10.

Prior to Saturday’s tournament, the Claudia Mayer Memorial Banquet featuring keynote speaker Jill Ellis, head women’s soccer coach at UCLA, will be held at the Sunrise Hilton Friday at 6 p.m. for all participating players, coaches and guests. Tickets for the banquet are available to the public for $50.

Proceeds from the tournament and banquet will be divided equally among the Howard County General Hospital’s Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center in Columbia, Md. and the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The KICKS Against Breast Cancer Intercollegiate Soccer Tournament was established in part by tournament director Louise Waxler in 1996 in honor of Claudia Mayer, who passed away the same year after a two-year battle with breast cancer.

Since the inaugural tournament eight years ago, the tournament and surrounding efforts have raised more than $295,000 and last year’s tournament at Maryland raised $44,000 alone.
