Aug. 27, 2004
FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason used goals in the first and second periods to overtake the University of Miami women’s soccer team, 2-0 at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va. in the Hurricanes’ season opener Friday night.
Miami (0-1-0) came out strong against the Patriots (1-0-1), outshooting GMU 7-4 in the first period, but trailed going into the half following a header by George Mason’s Sarah Wilkinson in the 30th minute to put the Patriots up, 1-0.
The Hurricanes came out strong in the second half, once again outshooting the Patriots in the period, but came up short as GMU turned in it’s second goal of the night at the 84:21 mark on an unassisted effort by Danielle MacDonald.
“George Mason came out extremely organized and was able to capitalize on the opportunities they had, but overall, I think we played well. We have to learn to take care of and respond to those same opportunities that we have,” Head Coach Tricia Taliaferro said.
Miami returns to action Sunday, taking on ACC-rival Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. at 7 p.m. The Hurricanes’ match with the Cavaliers will mark the first competition by any UM sport against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent as members of the ACC.
