Miami Travels Cross-Town to Take on Intra-City Foe Florida International

Sept. 13, 2005

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team will head across town Wednesday night to take on intra-city rival Florida International at University Park at 7 p.m.

Looking to rebound from a disappointing 1-0 overtime loss to then 14th-ranked Marquette last Sunday at the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind., the Hurricanes take to FIU with an overall record of 4-2 – the best start of fourth-year head coach Tricia Taliaferro’s UM career.

Prior to the loss to the Golden Eagles, Miami put together an impressive three-game win-streak, including a 3-0 upset over then 14th-ranked Princeton.

Offensively, the Hurricanes are led by a talented group of freshmen highlighted by midfielder Bryn Heinicke who leads the team with three goals and eight points on the year.

Fellow classmate forward Tessa Lennala is second on the team in points (5) behind a pair of goals and an assist followed by freshman midfielder Rachael Rigamat who also has two goals this season.

Sophomore keeper Lauren McAdam has posted an overall record of 4-1 in net this season with a pair of shutouts and leads the ACC with 5.80 saves per game.

Florida International heads into Wednesday game with an overall mark of 2-1-2 on the year and come in on the heels of their first loss of the season – a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the College of Charleston last Sunday.

The Golden Panthers have nearly doubled opponents shot output this season, averaging 16.2 shots per game while holding the opposition to 8.6 shots per game, and have three players in Janessa Taddei, Janet Liguori and Tamara Kochen who have each recorded at least 17 shots on the year.

Wednesday’s game will mark the eighth meeting between the Golden Panthers and the Hurricanes, who lead the series at 4-3 after last year’s 1-0 win in Coral Gables. Traditionally, the inner-city rivalry has been a close contest with five of the seven meetings decided by one goal.
