Sports Information Intern David Cruz recently caught a few passes from Hurricane quarterback Ken Dorsey. Catch an inside look of the QB in this exclusive interview.
Q: Describe your off-season on and off the field.
Dorsey: “My off-season consisted of two hours of lifting and running everyday and about an hour or two of throwing three days a week. I have classes usually in the morning from about 8 a.m. to 11a.m. or 12 p.m., depending on the summer session, and then I go home and sleep.”
Q: What if anything has made this off-season more productive?
Dorsey: “I think the thing that has made this off-season more productive is having the majority of the team down here for both summer sessions, the dedication that these guys have to winning and being out here consistently.”
Q: What are your personal thoughts on Coach Coker?
Dorsey: “I think he is a great coach. He is going to do a great job for us. He has some much experience in other places and he is definitely deserving of the head coaching job.”
Q: How do you feel about the loss of your receiving corps – Santana Moss, Reggie Wayne and Andre King?
Dorsey: “Naturally it’s a blow to the team. Those were great, great players and three guys everybody would love to see back for us. But we’ve got some great young talent and a couple older guys that I think will make great plays for us and that softens the blow with their departure.”
Q: What are your personal goals for this upcoming season?
Dorsey: ” I want to do what I can to ensure that the team comes out on top every game, do whatever it takes. My main goal is to get back to being in the national championship picture.”
Q: Where do you see yourself off the field in the future?
Dorsey: “Hopefully coaching. When football is all done with I would like to get into college coaching and hopefully that will be a possibility.”
Q: Have you made any significant changes over the off-season that might change the way you approach the game?
Dorsey: “I think the biggest thing I have done is trying to be more of a vocal guy with my teammates. I am trying to be more of a leader on and off the field. I think that has really been important for the team.”
Q: How can you apply the experiences of football into life?
Dorsey: “Any time you play on a football team, college or high school, you can apply that to life. Life is all about working as a team such as in the business world. The leadership skills and the skills of working with other people are things you can definitely take off the field.”
Q: Do you have any superstitions or pre-game rituals?
Dorsey: “I listen to the same music before every game. I have one CD that I listen to on the bus. I have another CD with two songs on it that I listen to walking into the stadium.”
Q: What was your favorite summer movie?
Dorsey: “The Fast and the Furious, that was pretty good.”
Q: What was the last book you read?
Dorsey: “The Lost World.”
Q: If you could go back to any time in history, where would you want to go to?
Dorsey: “I would go back and watch the Colts win the Super Bowl with Johnny Unitas. That would be the biggest thing I would ever want to watch in color. Now all you see is the black and white clippings. It would be fun to see it and be part of that game.”
Q: What do you do to relax and relieve stress?
Dorsey: “It doesn’t relax me too much, but usually I’m playing video games. Usually that gives me more tension and more stress but that is the main thing I do. I play either Madden football or Tiger Woods golf.”
Q: What do you like most about the city of Miami?
Dorsey: “I like the fact that you can get lost in everything. It’s such a big city, you can go out and not everybody is going to recognize you. You can lead a normal life for the most part. “
Q: What advice would you give to kids?
Dorsey: “The biggest thing is to have as much fun as you can when you are younger. Play as many different sports as you want to. Do all the stuff you want to do because when you get older you will have to concentrate on one or two things and you can’t play everything you want to. What you want to do right now is do all the things you want to do.”
Q: Who is your biggest influence in life?
Dorsey: “I think my biggest influence would be naturally my mom and my dad. They’ve been through a lot of things in their life. With everything they’ve been through they were able to instill ideals and different things that I shape my personality around.”
Q: What is your most prized possession?
Dorsey: “I have a laminated Sports Illustrated cover with Joe Montana, and it says `Cool Joe’ on the front of it. I would try to model myself after him, but he is too far above everyone.”
Q: What is your favorite meal?
Dorsey: “Pork chops with mash potatoes, gravy and corn.”
Q: Who is your all-time favorite athlete?
Dorsey: “Michael Jordan or Joe Montana.”
