Rowing Prepares for the 34th Annual San Diego Crew Classic

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing squad will travel west to San Diego, Calif. this weekend for the 34th annual San Diego Crew Classic held on the waters of Mission Bay. Competition is set to begin all day Saturday, March 31, and conclude Sunday, April 1.
The Hurricanes are excited to hit the waters as they look to capture their second trophy, marking their fifth trip to the San Diego Crew Classic. Last year, Miami won the Cal Cup in the Grand Final crossing the finish line at 7:05.3.
UM is scheduled to race in three heats on Saturday beginning with the Varsity 8 squad competing in the Jessop-Whittier Cup at 8:40 a.m. PT in the preliminary heat A. The competition will be fierce as the Hurricanes will stroke the waters against several teams ranked in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/US Rowing top 20, beginning with No. 1 ranked Cal. Rounding out the remaining competitors will be No. 11 Stanford, No. 18 Washington State, San Diego State and Purdue.
The JV 8 boat will take part in the women’s JV race at 9:50 a.m. PT, also part of the preliminary heat A, facing-off against No. 8 USC, Oregon State, Kansas State, and the University of San Diego.
The last race of the day for the Hurricanes will be the women’s open in the preliminary heat C, set to get underway at 11:30 a.m. PT.
The top two teams from each of the three heats qualify for the Grand Final on Sunday. The middle two crews will race in the petite final.
