Hurricanes Down Samford in 2-0 Shutout

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami capitalized on two unassisted scores by Jessica Gillman and Rebecca Tweneboah to knock off Samford 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Cobb Stadium.
Gillman’s goal – the eventual game winner for the Hurricanes (2-0-0) – came in the 35th minute from nearly 25 yards out. The shot, which was redirected by a Samford (1-1-0) defender, was knocked down by Bulldog keeper Cayley Winters but managed to roll into net off the deflection.
Tweneboah registered Miami’s second goal of the afternoon in the 65th minute, fighting through two defenders to get off a shot from the top left side of the 18 which found its way into the upper near post.
“I was really pleased with how we were able to build upon and improve our style of play from the first half to the second,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “Being able to adjust and settle down is a very good sign this early in the season.”
The 2-0 shutout by Miami and keeper Lauren McAdam, who posted four saves on the afternoon, marks just the third time in school history the Hurricanes have opened the season by holding the first two opponents scoreless.
The Hurricanes outshot Samford by a total of 16-to-4, including eight on goal compared to the Bulldogs four.
“I think the team enjoyed having success against UCF Friday night and was really eager to come out here and build upon that,” added Taliaferro.
The Hurricanes take to the road for the first time this season next weekend traveling to Greensboro, N.C. to take part in the UNC-Greensboro Tournament Friday and Sunday. Miami will face tournament host UNCG Friday at 5 p.m. and High Point Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
