ON GEORGIA TECH
Georgia Tech enters its match-up with Miami with a record of 9-2 following a 70-68 overtime loss at Kansas on January 1st. The Yellowjackets, who are ranked No. 9 by the Associated Press and 10th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, boast a senior ladden line-up that reached the NCAA Championship game last season. Junior guard/forward Jarrett Jack has done it all for the Yellowjackets this season averaging team-high’s scoring (14.3 ppg), assists (4.7 apg), steals (1.8 spg), field goal percentage (.598) and free throw percentage (.886). He also has pulled down 5.5 rebounds per contest. Georgia Tech, which is outscoring opponents by 21.9 points per game, has four players averaging in double-figures in scoring including senior guard B.J. Elder (13.2), senior guard Will Bynum (11.0) and senior center Luke Schenscher (10.1). The Yellowjackets have been one of the top defensive teams in the nation holding opponents to just 56.1 points per game, 34.9 percent shooting from the field and 27.9 shooting from three-point range.

ON THE COACHES:
Frank Haith was named Miami’s 11th head men’s basketball coach on April 12, 2004. In his 15 seasons as an assistant at the D-I level, he has helped lead teams that have won an NIT Championship, advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen three times, reached one Elite Eight and one Final Four. Haith is 9-2 this season with the Hurricanes. Georgia Tech head coach Paul Hewitt is in his sixth season with Georgia Tech and ninth season overall. His record at Georgia Tech is 85-56 (.603) while his overall mark is 151-83 (.645).

Robert Hite scored 22 points to lead the University of Miami to a 76-58 win over Norfolk State at Convocation Center. The win is the eighth consecutive for the Hurricanes Miami broke the game open with late in the first half with a 16-2 run that gave the Hurricanes a 32-14 lead with 6:31 remaining in the first half. Hite and Guillermo Diaz combined to score 12 of those 16 points. Diaz finished with 18 points, including 13 in the first half, as Miami took a 43-30 lead behind 57.1 percent shooting from the field. Miami held Norfolk State to 35.6 percent field goal shooting for the game including 29.4 percent in the second half. Karandick Ogunride scored 16 points and Chakowby Hicks added 15 for Norfolk State.

The Miami-Georgia Tech will be broadcast live in Miami on Sunshine Network. Bob Rathbun will handle the play-by-play duties with Mike Gminski adding analysis. The game will also be broadcast on the Hurricane Radio Network, WQAM (560 AM). Joe Zagacki “The Voice of the Hurricanes” will call the action with Josh Darrow adding analysis. Brian London will serve as studio host.

THE SERIES:
Miami and Georgia Tech meet for the fourth time with the Yellowjackets leading the all-time series 2-1. Georgia Tech has won the last two meetings including an 89-61 win on December 27, 1997 at the Orange Bowl Basketball Classic in Miami Arena. Miami’s lone win over Georgia Tech came on January 3, 1953, an 82-60 win in Miami.

MIAMI vs. NON-CONFERENCE OPPONENTS:
Since UM began conference play in 1991-92, the Hurricanes have compiled an 100-45 (.689) record against non-conference opponents, including a 71-15 (.826) mark at home. Miami went 9-2 against non-conference opponents this season.

MIAMI IN THE 2004-05 POLLS:
Miami received three votes in this week’s Associated Press College Basketball poll placing them in a tie for 36th in the nation. Miami’s highest ranking ever came on March 1, 1960 when the Hurricanes jumped to No. 8 in the Associated Press poll. Miami’s highest ranking since the rebirth of the program in 1985 is ninth by the Associated Press on March 1, 1999. The Hurricanes highest ranking ever in the Coaches poll also came on March 1, 1999 (10th).

PLAYING ABOVE THE RIM:
The Hurricanes recorded 90 dunks (3.0 per game) last season. Miami’s 90 dunks were the most since UM had 111 dunks during the 1988-89 season. Rob Hite led the Hurricanes in dunks last season with 29. This season the Hurricanes have recorded 36 dunks (3.3 per game).

VERSUS RANKED OPPONENTS:
The Hurricanes are 20-21 versus ranked opponents since 1996-97 and have defeated at least one ranked team in 10 of the last 11 seasons. Miami is 29-87 (.250) all-time against ranked teams including a 26-73 (.263) record since the rebirth of the program in 1985.

MIAMI’S LETHAL WEAPON III:
Miami’s three guard line-up of Robert Hite (20.0 ppg), Guillermo Diaz (15.1 ppg) and Anthony Harris (13.2 ppg) have been difficult for Hurricane opponents to contend with this season. The trio have combined to average 48.3 points per game, or 65.6 percent (531 of 809) of the teams scoring this season.

ACC’S TOP SCORING TRIOS:
The University of Miami trio of Robert Hite, Guillermo Diaz and Anthony Harris has combined to score 531 of UM’s 809 total points this season. The three have accounted for 65.6 percent of the team’s scoring which is the highest of any trio in the ACC. Duke’s J.J. Redick, Daniel Ewing and Shelden Williams rank second having accounted for 65.1 percent (484 of 744) of the Blue Devils’ scoring this season. In addition UM’s guards are the third highest scoring scoring trio in the ACC averaging 48.3 points per game. Duke (53.8 ppg) and North Carolina (49.8 ppg) rank first and second.

GETTING DEFENSIVE:
The Hurricanes have stepped things up on the defensive end holding their last five opponents to under 40 percent shooting from the field. The last time Miami held five consecutive teams to under 40 percent shooting was during the 1998-99 season when UM held six straight opponents to under 40 percent from the field. Over the last five games Miami’s opponents have shot 99-284 (.349) from the field.

RETURN TO SENDER:
Miami is averaging 5.73 blocks per game this season marking the highest average since the 2001-02 season when UM averaged 5.94 blocks per game. The highest average in school-history is 5.97 which was set during the 1996-97 season.
