Tallahassee, Fla. – The No. 12 Florida State women’s soccer team scored three first-half goals en route to a 4-1 win over the University of Miami at the Seminole Soccer Complex in a televised game on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, the Hurricanes snap a three-game win streak to fall to 9-4-3 on the season and 4-2-1 in the ACC, while the Seminoles win their fourth straight to improve to 10-3-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the conference.

“I think this is a lesson learned for the team,” said sixth-year head Miami coach Tricia Taliaferro. “When you play the top teams in the ACC and the top teams in the nation, you have to come out and play for all 90 minutes and take care of your individual responsibilities.

“I’m proud of the way that we played in the second half. We came back composed, scored and created some good scoring chances.”

The Seminoles got off to a fast start as their offense pressured the Hurricanes early. Miami’s back line of freshman Brittney Macdonald (Littleton, Colo.), sophomore Jessica Wyble (Potomac, Md.) and juniors Sammy Sanderson (Columbus, Ohio) and Corynn Carino (Los Gatos, Calif.) battled FSU’s constant attack, but Sanna Talonen broke through in the seventh minute, taking a pass from Katrin Schmidt and firing it in past UM senior goalkeeper Lauren McAdam (Simsbury, Conn.) for her ninth goal of 2007.

Just 10 minutes later, the Seminoles struck again as Mami Yamaguchi – the NCAA’s leading scorer – found herself in a one-on-one situation with McAdam and drilled in her 17th goal of the season just past McAdam into the lower right corner of the net.

The Hurricanes created their own scoring opportunities as the half progressed, as sophomore Beverly Goebel (Moreno Valley, Calif.), senior Sheuneen Ta (London, England) and freshman Brittney Steinbruch (Wyckoff, N.J.) registered shots on goal in the half.

But Miami found itself down 3-0 before the break, as Talonen netted her second goal of the game in the 38th minute. McAdam saved the `Canes from a 4-0 deficit, as she made a diving save on a Schmidt attempt with just 33 seconds remaining in the period. The three goals in a half were the most allowed by Miami all season.

A determined Hurricane squad took the field in the second half, and need just four minutes to get on the scoreboard. Steinbruch, Miami’s leading scorer and the ACC’s leader in conference games, took a pass from freshman Lauren Singer (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) and scored to get UM within a pair of goals. With her 16th goal of the season, she becomes Miami’s single-season leader in points (35), ties the single-season mark for goals (16) and moves into a three-way tie for fifth place in career goals. M

iami found itself trailing by three goals again in the 64th minute, as FSU’s Erica Sutton scored on an unassisted goal from a scramble in front of the net. The four goals by the Seminoles tied the season-high goals allowed by the `Canes in 2007, as they also let up four versus LSU in a 4-1 defeat on Sept. 8.

McAdam finished with four saves in 90 minutes of work, while FSU goalkeeper Erin McNulty grabbed four as well. FSU had 17 shots – including eight on goal, while UM recorded 12 shots, with five on goal.

The Hurricanes return to the friendly confines of Cobb Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 27, to take on ACC rival Clemson at 7 p.m. in their last home game of the regular season. Miami will recognize its four seniors – as well as senior student manager and former soccer player Jessica Gillman and junior Jenna Levenson – before their final regular-season home game for the Hurricanes.
