Miami Practices In Full Pads In Afternoon Practice

Aug. 16, 2001

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Hot weather failed to deter the University of Miami Hurricanes as the team concluded Thursday’s two-a-day practices with a two-hour workout in full pads at the Greentree Practice Fields on the UM campus.

Physical play was the hallmark of the afternoon session as the players closed the practice with some full-speed action. Head coach Larry Coker stopped practice a few minutes early as he was satisfied with the intensity and execution throughout the workout.

“I really liked the intensity,” said head coach Larry Coker. “I thought the guys came back and competed after a physical scrimmage yesterday. I talked to the team at the end of practice about their toughness and the attitude. We’re right in the middle of our two-a-days now and it’s getting hotter each day. They’ve done well to this point and I reminded them that we’re just getting into the toughest part of the preseason.”

Defensive end Jerome McDougle was in full pads for the workout, who returned to practice Thursday morning, sat out all of the contact work.

Miami continues two-a-day practices on Friday with workouts slated for 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Workouts are closed to the public. Media may watch practice during the first 30 minutes and final 15 minutes of each practice.

The Hurricanes begin the 2001 season Saturday, September 1, at Penn State in a nationally televised contest (ABC Sports). Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
