CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Head soccer coach Tricia Taliaferro, along with the University of Miami, announced Wednesday the hiring of Maureen McDonough as an assistant coach with the Hurricane soccer program.

McDonough, who played along side Taliaferro at the University of Maryland from 1994-96, comes to Miami after serving a five year-stint as an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

“I’m extremely excited about the addition of Maureen to our staff,” said Taliaferro. “As a teammate at Maryland, I had the opportunity to see first-hand the knowledge and enthusiasm she has for the game and look forward to those same attributes being reflected here at the University of Miami.”

“As both a player and a coach, Maureen has been involved with quality soccer programs throughout her career and with her experience, character and desire to succeed, I think Maureen can help us achieve what we are striving to accomplish at Miami.”

Prior to arriving at Miami, McDonough spent five seasons as an assistant coach with the women’s soccer team at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. While at Charlotte, she was involved in all areas of the women’s soccer program, including planning and instructing training sessions and recruiting players.

Before Charlotte, she spent two years at East Carolina University, where she helped coach the women’s soccer team to school records in wins, fewest goals allowed, and goals against average in 1999.

A native of Pasadena, Md., McDonough played soccer for the University of Maryland from 1994-97, where she was a three-year starter on defense and was named co-captain her senior year. While at Maryland she was coached by current national team head coach April Heinrichs.

She graduated from the University of Maryland in 1998 with a degree in physical education. She also earned a master’s in physical education and athletic administration from East Carolina University in 2000.

She currently holds a USSF “C” coaching license and is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
