Soccer Shuts Out Binghamton, 4-0

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team posted its second shutout of 2007, with a 4-0 win over Binghamton on Sunday afternoon at Cobb Stadium. With their first home win of the season, the Hurricanes improve to 3-2-1, while the Bearcats wrap up their South Florida trip winless at 0-5-1.
It marked the first shutout of the season and the 11th of her career for UM senior Lauren McAdam (Simsbury, Conn.), who took sole possession of second place in Miami’s career list for shutouts with the win. With 13 matches remaining in the regular season, McAdam is just two shy of the school record set by Rachel Elsby (1998-2002). She also grabbed two saves on the afternoon.
Binghamton’s Erin Iman picked up the loss for the Bearcats, but managed five saves on an afternoon in which the Hurricanes tied their season high with 30 shots, including 15 on goal. Jen McEachron put in 24 minutes in goal, allowing one goal and grabbing six saves.
Binghamton finished with three shots on the afternoon, including a pair on goal.
“Overall, I was pleased with the team’s performance today,” noted Miami head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “We were able to get a lot of players in and we were able to get a rhythm. All around we created a lot of opportunities and we were fortunate to be able to put some away.
“Getting this win at home is going to help build our confidence as we head into the remainder of our non-conference schedule.”
Freshman Lauren Singer (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) recorded the game-winning goal, scoring on a penalty kick in the 13th minute. Under six minutes later, freshman Brittney Steinbruch (Wyckoff, N.J.) took a pass from sophomore transfer Beverly Goebel (Moreno Valley, Calif./Sacramento State) and sailed a shot from the right corner of the box to the far side of the net to extend Miami’s lead to 2-0.
With Steinbruch’s team-leading seventh goal of the season – in just her sixth game for the `Canes, she moves into a five-way tie for eighth place in Miami’s single-season goals list and is just three goals shy of moving into Miami’s top 10 career list for goals.
Goebel, who has notched a team-high four assists this season, added her first goal for Miami at the 52-minute mark, with assists by junior Rachael Rigamat (La Crescenta, Calif.) and sophomore Jessica Wyble (Potomac, Md.).
The Hurricanes closed their scoring in the 72nd minute, as junior Jordan Ross (Stafford, Va.) and sophomore Courtney Alexander (Madison, Miss.) sent the ball to freshman Chelsea Pederson (Rohnert Park, Calif.), who fired a shot from outside the box over Binghamton’s goalkeeper for her first career goal.
Miami continues its non-conference schedule in Orlando on Wed., Sept. 19, with a 7 p.m. match at Central Florida. The Hurricanes return home to play host to Stetson on Fri., Sept. 21, at 7 p.m.
