CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s soccer team (5-4-0) gave up a late first half goal to the Michigan Wolverines (5-5-0) and despite firing 21 shots were unable to score any of their own in a 1-0 loss at the U-M Soccer Complex, Sunday afternoon.
As the case in each of their three 1-0 losses, the Hurricanes have outshot their opponents but just weren’t able to capitalize.
“It was a very tough loss for us, considering how well we played,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “It came down to us just doing a little extra in the box to score. I felt like we found a good rhythm and defended well as a whole. Soccer can be a cruel sport and we are experiencing that today.”
Unfortunately for Miami, it seemed like the match would remain scoreless heading into the break, but a free kick and ensuing goal with just 20 seconds remaining – gave Michigan the 1-0 lead. That would eventually prove to be the final.
The Wolverines Holly Hein scored her third goal of the season after getting a rebound off of Jackie Carron’s headed that went off the bar.
For the game, Miami took 21 shots to just six for Michigan. The Wolverines Halry Kopmeyer, made eight saves on the day for the shutout, while Vikki Alonzo made one.
Alonzo remains tied with former Hurricane keeper Lauren McAdam with 14 shutouts in a career. The Carrollton, Texas native will aim to have the record all to herself when the `Canes face Boston College in their ACC opener at Cobb Stadium on Thursday 7:30 p.m.
