The Head of the Chattahoochee is a 5000 meter (3 mile) head race on the Chattahoochee River/Lake Lanier, near Gainesville, Georgia. The last 2000 meters of the race will use the 1996 Olympic course and the finish line will be at the timing tower.

The event which is a USRowing registered regatta will range from novice to masters rowers and will feature teams from Rice, Stetson, Georgia, Florida, Central Florida, Jacksonville, North Carolina, Texas, Kansas, Clemson, Georgia Tech, and Georgia.

“The head of the Chattahoochee is an excellent regatta with some stiff competition,” said head coach Debra Morgan. “The event gives us a lot of opportunity to race in boat classes that we don’t necessarily focus on in the spring. The athletes get the chance to get out in the small boats and just have fun racing.”

“Our priority for the weekend, of course, is the championship eight,” noted Morgan. “In this event, we’re looking to be competitive with the top level crews including Clemson and Texas. In the small boats, we’re looking to win the quad event and place well in the doubles race. Our fours are the big mystery. We haven’t spent too much practice time in the line ups but we’ve got some very talented athletes in these boats. They could very well click on race day and be very competitive.”

All boats will be started sequentially and raced around the clock with the first race beginning at 8:15 a.m. Saturday morning and 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
