ORLANDO, Fla. – Competing in their second event of the spring season, the University of Miami volleyball team went 8-2 last weekend during the Second Annual UCF Spring Fling at The Venue at UCF in Orlando.

The Hurricanes played 10 matches last Saturday, going 8-2 overall – including wins against 2010 NCAA Tournament participants Florida State, Florida and Auburn.

Miami began the day defeating Atlantic Coast Conference opponent and in-state rival Florida State in two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-21. That was followed with a split against Auburn, 1-1 (21-25, 25-19).

UMiami also split with Florida (15-25, 25-20) – and was the only team to take a set from the Gators.

The `Cane swept the rest of the day, collecting 2-0 decisions against teams from North Florida (25-23, 25-18) and host UCF (25-12, 25-21).

On the day, Miami was led in kills by 2010 AVCA All-American Lane Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) with 31 kills, followed by freshman Emani Sims (Glenview, Ill.) with 22 kills and Ali Becker (Katy, Texas) adding 19 kills.

The setting duties for the Hurricanes were split between Central Florida native Katie Gallagher (Winter Park, Fla.) and Nrithya Sundararaman (Naperville, Ill.). Taylor Hollins (Long Beach, Calif.) served up four aces, and libero Ryan Shaffer (San Jose, Calif.) led UM in the digs category.

Miami’s next spring match is scheduled for April 9 – with the opponent yet to be determined. More information will be posted to HurricaneSports.com as it becomes available. The `Canes will conclude the spring season at the annual Fiesta on Siesta Key Beach Volleyball Tournament (April 16) in Siesta Key, Fla.

The Hurricanes are coming off their second 20-win season in three years, amassing a record of 23-9 en route to their second consecutive NCAA Tournament last fall. Junior outside hitter Lane Carico became the first player in school history to be named to the AVCA All-America Team, after also becoming the first in UM history to collect 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career.

The UCF Spring Fling event raised nearly $2,000 for the Central Florida Children’s Home while playing host to 14 teams from the Southeast.
