TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-Laura West (Allen, Texas) scored the game-winning goal in the 3-2 win over George Mason to conclude play in the Seminole Soccer Tournament in Tallahassee, Fla. Sunday afternoon.

The Hurricanes open the 2001 season 2-0 after beating Loyola 5-1 Friday night. The Patriots fall to 0-2 after losing 3-2 to Florida State Friday night.

George Mason scored 10 minutes into the match on a goal by Caroline Kent. Vonda Matthews (Broken Arrow, Okla.) tied the game one-all six minutes later, scoring on a pass from newcomer Britney Butcher (Bothell, Wash.) at 16:27.

Miami had a chance to take the lead as Lisa Gomez (Boca Raton, Fla.) took a penalty kick awarded to Miami in the very physical match with the Patriots. GMU goalkeeper Naomi Hines made her second penalty kick save of the weekend as she saved the PK taken by Gomez.

The Patriots were awarded a PK minutes after Miami, Katy McGee took the kick for GMU and scored at 34:42 putting the Patriots on top 2-1.

The Hurricanes came out strong in the second half as Alexis MacKenzie (Plantation, Fla.) scored at 60:27 on a pass from Mary Luke (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) knotting the score two-all.

Twenty minutes later Matthews fed West the game-winning goal.

UM outshot the Patriots 13 to eight and had eight corner kicks, compared to one for GMU.

The Hurricanes play Tuesday night in their home opener against Florida Atlantic at 7 p.m.
