Orlando, Fla. – Freshman Brittney Steinbruch (Wyckoff, N.J.) scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season as the University of Miami women’s soccer team played to a 2-2 draw in double overtime at UCF on Wednesday evening.

It is the first draw between the in-state rivals in their ninth meeting, as the teams are tied at 4-4-1 in the all-time series. The Hurricanes held the 2-1 lead into the final seconds of the game, when the Golden Knights capitalized on a free kick and knocked in the equalizer with three seconds remaining in regulation.

Steinbruch, who entered the week ranked fourth in the NCAA in goals per game (1.167) and 10th in points per game (2.33), moves into a two-way tie for seventh place in UM single-season goals with eight in just her seventh game as a Hurricane.

The true freshman gave Miami (3-2-2) the 1-0 lead in the 26th minute, taking a pass from senior Lindsay Curtin (Fairfax, Va.) and firing it into the upper left corner from about 40 yards out. It was the first assist of the season for Curtin.

UCF’s Becca Thomas tied the game at 1-all in the 35th minute for the Golden Knights (4-2-1), sending a shot from the top of the box into the lower left corner. The teams took the tie into intermission.

The Hurricanes continued to provide offensive pressure in the second half, as UCF goalkeeper Jennifer Mannis grabbed seven of her 10 saves in that period alone. Miami got off 12 shots in the half, including sophomore Beverly Goebel‘s (Moreno Valley, Calif./Sacramento State) goal in the 78th minute to give the `Canes the 2-1 lead. Goebel, who now has two goals on the season, took a shot from Curtin and sent it across the box into the far right corner of the goal.

Miami was just seconds away from victory, when UCF’s leading scorer Courtney Whidden took a pass off a free kick in the penalty box and netted the equalizer with just three seconds remaining in regulation.

The Hurricanes out-shot the Golden Knights, 28-19, including a 7-4 margin in the two overtime periods, however Miami finished with its school-record second tie of the season.

Senior Lauren McAdam (Simsbury, Conn) registered all 110 minutes in goal for the `Canes, finishing with a season-high seven saves, including four in the first half.

Miami returns home to Cobb Stadium for a three-game homestand, beginning with Stetson on Fri., Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. The Hurricanes then open their ACC slate with a match versus N.C. State on Thurs., Sept. 27, at 7 p.m., followed by a bout versus perennial powerhouse North Carolina on Sun., Sept. 30, at 1 p.m.
