Miami Host Matches with ACC Rivals, NC State and Maryland
Sept. 16, 2004
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Hurricane soccer team will host a pair of ACC matches over the weekend; taking on NC State Friday at 7 p.m. and Maryland Sunday at 1 p.m.
Friday’s match with the Wolfpack will mark the first ACC competition, by any sport, held at the University of Miami and will be recognized with a ceremony prior to the match in which all players and coaches will be presented with a commemorative coin.
The Hurricanes enter the weekend with an overall record of 0-3-0 after falling to No. 17 Auburn 2-1 last Friday in Coral Gables in the home opener. Junior forward Lindsey Yach connected on a penalty kick in the 22nd minute against the Tigers to score her first goal of the year, but the Tigers responded with a pair of goals in the second period to end the UM threat.
The Wolfpack come to Cobb Stadium on the heels of a five-match win streak, downing Youngstown State 5-0 Sept. 12 in their last outing to improve to 5-0-1 overall. The shutout against Youngstown State marked the fourth time NC State has held an opponent scoreless as the Wolfpack have now out-scored opponents 21-2 in 2004.
Maryland will host Washington Friday prior to traveling to Coral Gables in hopes of improving on their overall record of 3-1-1 this season. The Terps stunned an eighth-ranked UCLA team with a 2-1 victory in their last match Sept. 12.
“I’ve really been impressed with our spirit and enthusiasm this week in practice,” head coach Tricia Taliaferro said. “Coming off a frustrating loss to Auburn, we’ve worked tremendously hard this week to prepare for two very competitive teams in NC State and Maryland.
“Anytime you play in the ACC, it’s going to be tough, but I feel like we’ve improved quite a bit since the start of the season and we look forward to that hard work paying off,” Taliaferro added.
The first 100 UM students in attendance Friday night will receive free pizza on behalf of Category 5 as part of Hurricane Force Day.
