Steinbruch Nets a Pair of Goals to Lead Miami Soccer Past FIU, 3-1

Miami, Fla. – Freshman Brittney Steinbruch (Wyckoff, N.J.) netted a pair of goals on Wednesday evening to lead the University of Miami women’s soccer team to its third-straight win, downing Florida International, 3-1, in non-conference action at University Park.
With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 9-3-3 on the season and 6-3-1 all-time versus the Golden Panthers. FIU is one of just two teams Miami has faced in all 10 seasons it has had a women’s soccer program, as the Hurricanes will face the other familiar foe – Florida State – in ACC competition on Sunday.
“I’m very pleased with the consistent overall play of the team,” said sixth-year Miami head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “Sometimes it’s difficult to remain focused when you go on to road for a non-conference game in the middle of the ACC schedule. But the team did a good job in staying focused and in continuing to create scoring opportunities.”
Steinbruch didn’t need long to get the Hurricanes on the scoreboard, firing in back-to-back goals in the 12th and 16th minutes. Sophomore Jessica Wyble (Potomac, Md.) registered her third assist of the season on Steinbruch’s first goal of the game, while senior Sheuneen Ta (London, England) added her second assist of the season – and the 12th of her career to move into a tie for seventh place in UM history in career assists – on Steinbruch’s second goal-the game-winner.
FIU broke Miami’s two-game shutout streak with a goal by freshman Claudia Cardenas in the 37th minute, but the Hurricanes extended their lead back to two goals in the 52nd minute when Steinbruch sent a pass from the left side of the box to sophomore Beverly Goebel (Moreno Valley, Calif.), who found the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
With her 15th goal of the season, Steinbruch is just one goal shy of the Miami record for single-season goals set by Britney Butcher in 2002 and is just one point shy of the single-season record for points (34), also set by Butcher in 2002. The true freshman extends her single-season record with six game-winning goals – which also moves her into a three-way tie for third place in career game winners.
Senior goalkeeper Lauren McAdam (Simsbury, Conn.) – the reigning NSCAA National Player of the Week – finished with three saves in 90 minutes of work, while FIU keeper Madeline Gannon made 10 saves, as the Hurricanes took the 20-11 advantage in shots – including the 13-4 margin in shots on goal.
The Hurricanes return to ACC competition on Sun., Oct. 21, with a televised game at No. 12 Florida State. The game will air live on Sun Sports at 1 p.m.
