CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami junior quarterback Ken Dorsey has been named to the preseason “Watch List” of top candidates for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award that is given annually to the nation’s top college quarterback, the Davey O’Brien Foundation announced Thursday.

Dorsey, from Miramonte High School in Orinda, Calif., threw for 2,727 yards and 25 touchdowns while throwing just five interceptions during the 2000 season en route to breaking the UM record for passes thrown without an interception. Entering his second full season as the starting quarterback, Dorsey is regarded as a preseason candidate for the multiple honors. His 2000 totals for completions, completion percentage and yardage rank among the top 10 single-season performances by a Hurricanes quarterback. Over the span of 15 starting assignments during his career, Dorsey has led Miami to victory 14 times and he already ranks among UM career leaders for completion percentage (4th, 59.3 percent), touchdown passes (7th, 35) and total offense (11th, 3,501 yards).

The Davey O’Brien Award Advisory Committee of sportswriters and commentators will select eight semifinalists for the award during the first week of November, followed by another vote during the week of Thanksgiving to determine the winner. The winner of the 2001 Davey O’Brien Award will be announced December 6 during ESPN’s Home Depot College Football Awards Show in Orlando, Fla. The three finalists will be honored at the 25th annual O’Brien Awards Dinner in February, 2002, at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
