Women's Basketball Beats Providence, 77-64

CORAL GABLES, Fla.-Tamara James (Dania, Fla.) scored 30 points to lead the University of Miami women’s basketball team to a 77-64 victory over visiting Providence College Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

The Hurricanes improve to 15-9 overall and 7-6 in the BIG EAST, while the Friars fall to 9-16 overall and 3-11 in conference.

James also led the team with eight rebounds. Meghan Saake (Wellington, Fla.) scored 17 points and picked up eight steals in the winning effort.

Melissa Knight (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 15 points, while Yalonda McCormick (Miami, Fla.) dished out a career-high 11 assists.

Miami opened the game on a 17-6 run and never lost the lead after that. The Hurricanes led by nine points (37-28) at halftime.

The Friars cut the Miami lead to just two-points with 10 minutes remaining in the game. The Hurricanes answered as Tatjana Marincic (Mississauga, Ontario) hit a jumper to spark a 13-0 run over the next four minutes.

Miami re-gained the double-digit lead and rolled to a 13-point victory over Providence.

The Hurricanes lead the all-time series 15-6 over the Friars.

Miami is back in action travelling to face Seton Hall Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
