Miami's Varsity 4 Takes First Place to Open up Action at the Longhorn Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas. – The University of Miami women’s rowing team kicked off their 2007 spring season capturing a very close first place finish along with three second place finishes against tournament host Texas on the first day of the Longhorn Invitational held on Town Lake in Austin, Texas Friday evening.

Miami competed in all four of their races against the Longhorns, beginning with Varsity 4, JV8, Varsity 8, and Novice 8.

The eventful dual race against Texas began with a camera-shot finish as the Varsity 4 made their presence known by taking first place with a time of 7:44.1. It was an extremely close race with the Longhorns were right on their heels, as they placed second to finish with a time of 7:44.7.

The second race finished with JV 8 taking second place with a time of 7:02.0 with Texas finishing 6:51.2 to finish first.

Miami’s Varsity 8 showed great stride in the waters with yet another very close race. With an impressive second place finish, the Hurricanes were not far along with their time of 6:41.9 compared to Texas’ 6:40.7.

The day ended with Miami’s Novice 8 crossing the finish line at 7:54.6 for second place, as Texas finished at 7:02.6.

The Hurricanes return to the course today where all three Eights and Varsity 4 will compete against Iowa beginning at 8:40 a.m. CT. In the evening all three Eights will be back on the water as they face Kansas State at 5:00 p.m. CT.
