CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team surrendered a game-winning goal in the 108th minute to fall to Florida Atlantic 1-0 in a double-overtime heartbreaker Wednesday night in Boca Raton, Fla.

The Owls’ Katri Nokso-Koivisto scored with just two minutes remaining, hitting the back of the net past UM keeper Alex Alford from the top left corner of the box to hand the Hurricanes the loss in their final regular season match. Miami now falls to 3-12-0 overall on the year while FAU improves to 11-3-3 this season.

In a defensive battle, the Hurricanes out-shot FAU 16-12 while Alford registered eight saves in net during the course of the match.

The Owls’ Megan Coyne took the win at goal for FAU behind a seven-save outing, including a potential game-winner in the second overtime, when Lindsey Yach blasted a shot from in front of the box into the top-left corner only to have it knocked down by Coyne.

After being held without a shot in the second overtime, FAU’s Susanna Lehtinen made her way through the UM defense and into the Hurricane zone after intercepting a pass. Lehtinen then found Nokso-Koivisto, who ripped a shot on goal past Alford, who had come out of net to contend, to score the game-winner at the 107:56 mark.

The Hurricanes will await the winner of the Wake Forest-Clemson match on Thursday evening to determine their first-round opponent in the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.
