Jan. 28, 2002
Sophomore swimmer Courtney Caples has been selected the July 2001 Academic All-Star after leading the Hurricanes in the pool and in the classroom.
Caples, from Tuscaloosa, AL, held a 4.0 GPA in Business Administration following her first year at Miami. Among the academic accolades achieved by Caples were President and Provost Honor Rolls, Dean’s List, AD Honor Roll, Athletic Academic Services Book Buster Club and BIG EAST Academic All-Star.
Last season, Caples quickly became one of the Hurricanes top swimmers. She was a mainstay in Coach Jim Sweeney’s line-up for the breaststroke and freestyle races. In a 161-141 win over Florida Atlantic last season, Caples finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke, second in the 50-yard freestyle and second in the 200-yard breaststroke. She followed up by winning the 100-yard breast and second in the 100-yard freestyle in Miami’s win over Indian River Community College. Although the women placed third behind Indiana and Notre Dame, Caples emerged on top by winning the 200-yard breaststroke and finishing fourth in the 100-yard freestyle.
