Gene Hill joins the University of Miami women’s basketball program as Associate Head Coach in the spring of 2026, bringing nearly 30 years of collegiate coaching experience and a proven track record of player development, recruiting, and program success.
Hill arrives in Coral Gables after serving eight seasons as head coach at Georgia State, where he led the Panthers from 2018–2026. Prior to his time in Atlanta, he spent five seasons at NC State, helping guide the Wolfpack to a 112-52 record, three NCAA Tournament appearances, and a Sweet 16 berth. During his tenure, Hill played a key role in developing All-ACC guards Miah Spencer and Dominique Wilson, both of whom advanced to professional careers.
Before NC State, Hill spent four seasons at Georgia Tech, where he contributed to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including the program’s first Sweet 16 appearance in 2012. While with the Yellow Jackets, he helped develop WNBA first-round draft picks Alex Montgomery and Sasha Goodlett.
Hill’s coaching résumé also includes six seasons at Butler, where he served in multiple assistant coaching roles, as well as an interim head coaching stint at East Carolina during the 2001-02 season. Earlier in his career, he served as head coach at USC Spartanburg and held assistant coaching positions at Lander and Coker College.
Known for his ability to develop elite perimeter players and prepare student-athletes for success at the professional level, Hill has mentored multiple All-Conference performers and WNBA prospects throughout his career. He also currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
A native of LaGrange, Georgia, Hill earned his degree in physical education from Coker University in 1997.
