Michael Whalen joined the University of Miami women’s basketball staff in September 2016.
The Cleveland native served as the coordinator of video services in 2016-17 and was promoted to coordinator of video operations on May 15, 2017, also his birthday. Whalen was elevated to his current role as the associate director of video coaching operations and creative content in advance of the 2018-19 campaign.
Miami is 45-20 in Whalen’s two seasons on staff, posting a 20-12 ACC mark and reaching the NCAA Tournament both years.
Hailing from Cleveland, Whalen spent three seasons as the head manager and video assistant for the Ohio State University women’s basketball program, helping the team reach the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2016. During his final two years at Ohio State, the Buckeyes posted a combined 50-19 record.
Prior to his time at Ohio State, Whalen played one year of basketball at John Carroll University, a Division III school in Ohio. A standout player at Lake Catholic High School, Whalen finished his career second on the all-time scoring list.
Whalen graduated from Ohio State in 2016 after majoring in biology and minoring in business.
