Fitzroy Anthony - Women's Basketball - University of Miami Athletics

Fitzroy Anthony just completed his ninth season with the Miami women’s basketball program after being named an assistant coach on May 18, 2015. After seven successful seasons as an assistant coach and assistant head coach, Anthony was elevated to associate head coach on May 5, 2022.

Upon 19-year head coach Katie Meier’s retirement, Fitzroy Anthony was named interim head coach March 22, 2024.

National Recognition and Proven Leader

  • Anthony was recognized nationally on a pair of instances in the 2023-24 season
  • Named No. 2 in the nation by The Athletic on the publications list of top assistants
  • Selected to participate in the WBCA’s 2024 Next Gen Institute 
  • Went 3-0 in his time as interim head coach during the start of the 2022-23 season

Success at Miami

  • Miami holds a 182-102 record during Anthony’s tenure as a member of the Hurricanes’ coaching staff.
  • The Hurricanes have reached the NCAA Tournament in six of the nine years that Anthony has been on staff, including the program’s first ever Elite Eight appearance in 2023.
  • Anthony has helped Miami to 20-plus wins in six of his eight seasons.

A Player’s Coach

  • Anthony has worked with nine All-ACC performers in forward/centers Erykah Davenport, Destiny Harden, Emese Hof and Beatrice Mompremier, and guards Haley Cavinder, Kelsey Marshall, Adrienne Motley, Jessica Thomas and Ja’Leah Williams.
  • Adrienne Motley and Beatrice Mompremier both earned WBCA All-America Honorable Mention accolades.
  • Three Hurricanes – Motley (2017), Mompremier (2020) Harden (2023) – were selected in the WNBA Draft.
  • Anthony has also helped guide three guards, Endia Banks, Kelsey Marshall and Ja’Leah Williams, to ACC All-Freshman Team recognition.

An Elite Recruiter

  • Anthony took over as recruiting coordinator for the Hurricanes in 2021.
  • In the fall of 2023 he helped Miami to the ninth-ranked recruiting class according to the espnW, signing Ahnay Adams (No. 10 point guard and three-time New Hampshire Gatorade Player of the Year), Leah Harmon (five-star guard and top-30 prospect), Simone Pelish (four-star guard and New York State champion) as well as Aurora Almon (four-star forward)
  • He was instrumental in signing the No. 12 recruiting class in the nation, according to espnW Hoopgurlz.
  • Anthony helped sign a pair of top-30 players in Kyla Oldacre (No. 25) and Lazaria Spearman (No. 30).

Success in the Transfer Portal

  • Anthony helped bring in some key student-athletes via the transfer portal in recent years
  • Helped bring in twins, Hanna and Haley Cavinder, after they spent three years at Fresno State and earned numerous Mountain West accolades
  • Haley was named Second Team All-ACC in 2023 and helped Miami reach the Elite 8
  • Helped recruit Texas transfer Latasha Lattimore, ranked No. 38 in the class of 2021 and sixth-best forward per espnW HoopGurlz
  • Recruited and brought in four transfers prior to the 2023-24 season: Shayeann Day-Wilson (2022 ACC Freshman of the Year at Duke), Jaida Patrick (Second Team All-Ivy League pick at Columbia) and Lemyah Hylton (four-star recruit out of Ontario, Canada) all earned significant minutes in 2023-24.

Shut Down Defense

  • Miami ranked third in scoring defense in the eight-NCAA bid ACC in 2023-24, holding teams to an average of 60.4 points per game
  • The Canes also held opponents to 37.4 shooting from the field, good for third in the league
  • Miami set the program single game blocks record with 13 swats against Wake Forest Jan. 7, 2024

Transitioning with FAU

  • Anthony was an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic University for three seasons and helped the Owls make the move from the Sun Belt to Conference USA in his second year with the program.
  • In his final season there, the Owls had one backcourt player named First Team All-Conference USA and another selected to the league’s all-freshman team.
  • Anthony played a key part in the Owls’ scouting, defensive game planning and academic mentoring, while also handling all of the team’s scheduling.
  • A stellar recruiter, Anthony helped FAU sign the second-ranked recruiting class in the conference in 2014, according to Collegiate Girls Basketball Report.

Miami Roots

  • Anthony was the head coach at Coral Springs Charter School for two years, prior to making the move to FAU in August 2012.
  • He led the Panthers to 20-win seasons both years and was named the Broward County Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 2012.
  • Anthony directed the Panthers to their first regional and district championships in 2012, as well as their first berth in the Final Four of the state tournament.
  • Four players he coached at Coral Springs Charter School went on to play Division I basketball.

AAU Connections With the Miami Suns

  • Anthony took the reigns for the highly successful Miami Suns AAU program
  • Helped the Suns win over 80 percent of their games
  • Seven of his players proceeded to play collegiately in the ACC, SEC or Big 12.

Beyond the Court

  • Married to his wife Cara
  • Together they have a son, Roman, and daughter, Skylar
  • Born in Antigua, Anthony moved to Boca Raton at age 12.
  • He played basketball at Olympic Heights High School and then at Palm Beach Atlantic University, where he graduated in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in education.
