Rob Jarvis - Track & Field - University of Miami Athletics

Rob Jarvis, who enters his seventh season with the Hurricanes men’s and women’s program, has made his impact on one of the nation’s historically strong Track & Field teams.

The Hurricanes jumps and combined-events groups under Jarvis have contributed greatly to the team’s success, with women earning three ACC titles since his arrival in the fall of 2017. During his tenure in Coral Gables, multiple Hurricanes have earned one National Championship, 6 First Team All-America Honors, 16 qualifying for the NCAA East Preliminary Round, 9 ACC Champions, as well as 46 All-ACC Honors.

The 2023 season was a coming-out party for Russell Robinson in the triple jump, placing him amongst the best in the US and on the world stage. Robinson’s personal best jump of 17.12m/56’2 at the Mt SAC Relays not only broke his school record but also broke the ACC Outdoor record and placed him on the NCAA All-Time list. Other highlights from the season included Robinson being an NCAA Indoor All-American in the triple jump and capping his junior year with a runner-up finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. For Team USA, Robinson earned a gold medal at the NACAC U23 Championships in Costa Rica, his first international medal.

On the women’s side, several jumpers etched their names into the UM All-Time list and earned All-American accolades. Ashley Moore had a personal best triple jump of 13.25m/43’5.75 at the Hurricane Invitational, and later qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships by advancing out of the East Preliminary with a jump of 13.25m, tying her personal best. Training partner Marquasha Myers advanced out of the East Preliminary round with an all-conditions best of 13.10m/43′. High jumpers Taylor Wright and Rachel Robertson moved into the All-Time list with matching jumps of 1.77m/5’9.75.

The 2022 campaign saw the women’s team win the ACC Outdoor Championship Title with Ashley Moore taking the runner-up spot in the triple jump. For the men, Isaiah Holmes capped his senior season in Coral Gables by qualifying for both NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the long jump, and for the Outdoor Championship in the high jump. At the ACC Indoor Championships Holmes earned the Field Athlete of the Meet award for lifetime best performances, which ultimately improved his UM school records, in winning ACC Titles in both the long jump of 8.03m/26’4.25 and high jump 2.19m/7’2.25. Russell Robinson took the ACC Outdoor crown in the triple jump and later was a finalist at the US Championships, placing 4th with a school record and PB of 16.65m/54’7.5. Justin Forde took bronze at ACC Indoors in the triple jump and had a season’s best jump of 16.04m moving him onto UM All-Time List.

The 2021 season was the final year for standout Michelle Atherley, culminating in a lifetime best performance that summer at the US Olympic Trials in the heptathlon. Her score of 6352 placed 4th at the Trials, placing her for the second time on the NCAA All-Time list. At the NCAA Outdoor Championships, she was runner-up in the heptathlon. At the ACC Outdoor Championships, Atherley won her third heptathlon crown as well as being named the Field Athlete of the Meet. Atherley would also be named the ACC Field Athlete of the Year for her banner senior year. Holmes in his first year with the Canes put his stamp immediately on the high jump, claiming the outdoor school record with a leap of 2.21m/7’3. Holmes would later go on to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships and the US Olympic Trials in the event. At the ACC Indoor Championships Taylor Wright took home the high jump title and also moved onto the UM All-Time list.

The 2020 year that was cut short by COVID lockdowns had a few bright spots prior to the cancellation of the outdoor season. Darlene Charles earned indoor All-ACC honors in the women’s triple jump with a 4th place finish. Tristan Schultheis had an indoor lifetime best high jump of 2.10m/6’10.75 moving him onto the UM All-Time list.

The 2019 school year was highlighted by the women winning the ACC Indoor Conference Championship and Atherley winning the NCAA Indoor Championship in the pentathlon. Atherley’s score of 4547 put her at #7 on the NCAA All-Time list, placing her amongst the historical greats in the combined-events. At the ACC Indoor meet Atherley won the pentathlon and also claimed the Field Athlete of the Meet award for her efforts in the pentathlon, 60h, and high jump. Atherley would also be named ACC Field Athlete of the Year. Atherley went on to place 3rd at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and 7th at the US Championships, which earned her a spot on the US Thorpe Cup team in Germany. On the men’s side Andreas Christodoulou would take 3rd place in the heptathlon at the ACC Indoor Championships and later earn All-ACC honors outdoors in the decathlon. Hasani Knight also took 3rd place in the triple jump with a lifetime best leap of 15.63m/51’3.5 which also put him on the UM All-Time outdoor list.

The 2018 season was capped with the Canes winning the ACC Outdoor Championship by defending their home track in The Gables. The jumps group contributed 34 of the teams 117 points. Atherley was named Field Athlete of the Meet by way of winning both the heptathlon and high jump, as well as running a leg on the winning 4x400m relay. Celine Thompson was runner up in the high jump and Niara Hill placed 3rd in the triple jump. During the indoor and outdoor season Atherley would go on to earn First Team All-American honors in both the pentathlon and heptathlon. At the ACC Indoor meet Atherley and Amy Taintor would place 2nd and 3rd moving them both onto the UM All-Time List. On the men’s side Andreas Christodoulou would take the runner-up spot at the ACC Outdoor Championships.

From the fall of 2013 to the winter of 2015, Jarvis was an assistant coach at IMG Academy, working under the direction of world-renowned sprint coach and clinician Loren Seagrave. Jarvis assisted with Seagrave’s elite professional training group and helped build the now thriving IMG Academy high school track & field program. Jarvis coached the jumps event athletes from various country’s federations, specifically Suriname, Brazil, China, and Barbados.

Athletes of note from the IMG based-group included 2015 World Champion and Diamond League Champion in the long jump Tianna Madison, 2014 European bronze medalist Darya Klishina, 2015 Pan American Games silver medalist in the triple jump Keila Costa, and CARIFTA Games gold medalist and Suriname national record holder in the triple jump Miguel Van Assen.

Book-ending his time at IMG Academy, Jarvis had two stops at UCLA. The first was from 2010-13 and the second from 2016-17. During that time Bruins earned 8 All-American awards, 12 NCAA West Preliminary qualifiers, 24 All Pac-12 honors, a World Championships qualifier in the decathlon, and a U23 European finalist in the triple jump.

Jarvis started his coaching journey at his alma mater and NAIA powerhouse Azusa Pacific University (APU now a member of NCAA Division II). From 2005-10 the team won a combined eight National Championships (five men’s and three women’s). Jarvis helped mentor seven individual National Champions, 49 All-Americans, and 10 All-American Relays teams.

Also, while at APU Jarvis assisted the coaching staff of fellow alum, Olympic and World Champion decathlete Bryan Clay. Clay would win the gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, silver at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, and gold three times at the IAAF World Championships. Jarvis assisted the coaching staff with meet preparation and training, as well as traveled with Clay to numerous meets including the US Olympic Trials and World Championships.
