AT MIAMI: Became a team leader in 2002, his first season as the starter at strong safety… reads the quarterback well and has excellent anticipation… made several of the 2002 season’s most significant defensive plays… missed spring practice following surgery on his left shoulder in January… played most of 2002 with a separated shoulder.
2002 (JUNIOR): A first-team All-BIG EAST selection by the league’s head coaches in his first season as a starter at strong safety… pivotal player for a unit that featured four new starters and was missing its top five players from the previous season… credited with 80 tackles (34 solos), two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, three interceptions (returned for 150 yards), one quarterback hurry, broke up nine passes, blocked a kick and returned two interceptions for touchdowns… his 150 interception return yards ranks second on the UM single-season list… made 12 tackles (two solos) in the Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State… had five tackles (two solos) against Virginia Tech… made seven tackles (four solos), broke up two passes and returned an interception 53 yards for a touchdown at Syracuse… made seven stops (two solos), recovered a fumble and broke up two passes against Pittsburgh… recorded six tackles, including four solo tackles, against Tennessee… made five tackles including three solos, against Rutgers… recorded a solo tackle at West Virginia… made 10 tackles in the game against Florida State… recorded two tackles and forced a fumble against Connecticut… had 11 tackles (six solos), broke up a pass and forced a fumble against Boston College… recorded five solo tackles and two assists, and broke up a pass against Temple… had a breakout game in the victory over Florida with two interceptions, returning one 97 yards for a touchdown… also registered four tackles (one solo) and deflected two passes against Florida, and was named National Defensive Player of the Week by the Football Writers Association, in addition to being named the Big East Defensive Player of the Week… started at strong safety in the opener against Florida A&M and made three tackles (one solo) and deflected a pass.
2001 (SOPHOMORE): One of the Hurricanes’ top special teams players… a standout player on Miami’s kickoff coverage unit… one of the team’s most physical defensive backs… saw extensive action in nickel and dime coverage packages… made 15 tackles, nine unassisted, including two for losses (11 yards) and a quarterback sack… also intercepted a pass… had a season-high three tackles against Penn State and against Troy State… had a quarterback sack on the game’s final play in the victory at Florida State… intercepted a pass against West Virginia.
2000 (FRESHMAN): Played extensively in nickel and dime coverage packages… also saw playing time on special teams… played in nine games and made eight tackles (all unassisted)… had five unassisted tackles against Louisiana Tech… had one tackle in games against Rutgers, Syracuse and Boston College.
1999 (REDSHIRT): Spent the season on the Hurricane scout team.
HIGH SCHOOL: Monsignor Pace… SuperPrep’s No. 11 player in Florida… selected as the No. 5 athlete in the SEC Region by PrepStar… Tampa Tribune Blue Chip selection… No. 35 on Tampa Tribune national top 100… Atlanta Journal-Constitution Super Southern 100… Florida’s No. 2 corner back on Florida Times-Union Super 75… No. 10 on Tampa Tribune Florida top 50… Max Emfinger National and Dixie Blue Chip… an All-State, All-District and All-County selection as a senior… led team to a 14-1 record, the regional and district championship, and a berth in the state semifinals his senior year… caught 47 passes for 1,103 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior… recorded 45 tackles and six interceptions as a member of the team’s defensive backfield… returned 15 punts for 327 yards and two scores as well as five kickoffs for 127 yards… was chosen the Miami Herald District 4A-1A Defensive Player of the Year as a senior… also lettered in track where he recorded personal best times of 10.91 in the 100-meters and 22.7 in the 200-meters… coached in football by Joe Zaccheo.
