Hurricanes Notch Top-10 Win to Stay Undefeated
RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team (7-2, 4-0 ACC) clinched its fourth straight conference win with a 4-3 victory over the No. 9 NC State Wolfpack (10-5, 3-1) on Sunday evening.
The win marks their best ACC start since 2015 when they went 4-0 to start ACC action.
The Wolfpack earned the doubles point with a 6-2 win from No. 2 Gabriella Broadfoot and Victoria Osuigwe over Sofia Rocchetti and Sebastianna Scilipoti. Then, No. 57 Jasmine Conway and Anna Zyryanova took down Raquel Gonzalez and Jaquelyn Ogunwale, 6-3, on court two, while Mia Slama and Lavinia Tanasie notched the 6-4 win over Dominika Podhajecka and Maria Vargas.
Rocchetti secured her first ranked win with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 over No. 35 Broadfoot on court two, while Scilipoti tallied another ranked win for the Hurricanes with a 6-3, 7-5 win over No. 29 Lavinia Tanasie to take the lead, 2-1. Podhajecka picked up another ranked win for Miami as she defeated No. 66 Zyryanova, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 on court fourt.
The match was then moved indoors due to weather. NC State’s Jasmine Conway tallied a point over Daria Volosova, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, on court six, before Aely Arai fell, 7-6 (6), 2-6, 4-6, to Victoria Osuigwe on court five to tie the match.
Down to the top court, No. 94 Gonzalez battled No. 41 Slama for the match win. Four hours later, Gonzalez took down Slama, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 to keep Miami perfect in conference play.
The Hurricanes are back at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Wednesday for a non-conference match against Boston University.
