Miami Dominates FIU, 7-0
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team (2-1) swept the FIU Panthers (1-1), 7-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Miami jumped out early by securing the doubles point. Court two’s Ela Plosnik and Aely Arai were deemed an automatic win, being up 2-0, when FIU retired due to injury. Sebastianna Scilipoti and Daria Volosova then earned a dominant 6-1 win over Vittoria Baccino and Maria Araoz-Gosn on court three.
Raquel Gonzalez and Dominika Podhajecka led 4-3 at the top court when play was halted.
Singles play opened with another automatic singles win with FIU only having five eligible players.
Podhajecka notched a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Araoz-Gosn on court four, followed by a match clinch from No. 97 Arai, who defeated Aleksandra Simeva, 6-3, 6-3, on court three.
No. 73 Gonzalez extended the lead for the Hurricanes with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Katerina Mandelikova at the top court, while Plosnik completed a comeback win over Vittoria Baccino, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, on court two. Volosova then completed the sweep after rallying for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win against Viktorie Hazmukova on court five.
Miami will continue its homestand with back-to-back match days against FAU and UCF on Feb. 14 and 15, respectively.
