Down 15, Miami Rallies Behind Kimpson’s 23 Points to Defeat SMU, 75–66

DALLAS, Tex.— The Miami women’s basketball team earned a 75–66 road victory over SMU on Sunday evening at Moody Coliseum.

The Hurricanes were led by Amarachi Kimpson, who scored a game-high 23 points in her home state. Gal Raviv and Ahnay Adams followed with 18 points apiece, with Adams’ performance marking a career high.

Despite placing three players in double figures, the win did not come easily. Miami trailed for more than 34 minutes and faced a deficit as large as 15 points before mounting a late comeback to secure the victory.

Miami is now 12–8 overall and 4–5 in ACC play, while the Mustangs sit at 8–13 overall with a 1–8 record in conference action.

SMU opened the game with a dominant 17–2 run, capitalizing on three turnovers by Gal Raviv to pressure Miami on both ends of the floor. After a three-minute scoring freeze, the Hurricanes responded with seven straight points, cutting the deficit to 17–9 at the first media timeout. Miami continued to shrink the early deficit for the remainder of the quarter, narrowing the gap to as close as 19–17 with 2:11 remaining, but the Mustangs closed the period leading 24–17.

The Mustangs carried its momentum into the second quarter, scoring the first four points and maintaining the offensive control. SMU took advantage of Miami’s ongoing slow start, forcing four more turnovers and holding the Hurricanes to 35.3 percent shooting from the field. SMU ultimately outscored UM 23–17 in the second period to head into halftime with a 47–34 advantage.

Miami opened the scoring column in the third quarter with Adams on the free throw line. SMU responded with a driving layup before Kimpson had a four-point play at 7:34 to shift the energy in Miami’s direction. The Canes then went on a 10-2 offensive stretch to get the score within five (51-46). Miami kept fighting for the remainder of the period, outscoring the Mustangs for the first time at 19-10. Entering the fourth and final quarter, SMU led 57-53 over Miami.

Going into the final period, Miami trailed for over 29 minutes and faced as large as a 15-point deficit, before claiming its first lead of the game at 63-61(4:32). The Canes resurgence was led by Raviv with 12 points and Kimpson with 11 in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Meanwhile, SMU was held scoreless for 2:38 before hitting their first three pointer of the half to tie the game at 64-64 (1:58). However, Miami’s fight wasn’t over with Kimpson scoring five of the next eight points to put the Canes ahead once more, before closing out 75-66.

The Hurricanes will return to Watsco Center on Thursday night to take on the Duke Devils. This will mark Miami’s first home contest since defeating the Seminoles on Jan. 11. The Canes and Devils are slated for an 8 p.m. ET tipoff with full game coverage on ACCN.
