Miami Women’s Basketball Drop 74-66 Road Contest at Notre Dame
SOUTH BEND, Ind.— The Miami women’s basketball team was defeated 74-66 at Notre Dame on Thursday night. The matchup was a back-and-forth contest, until Notre Dame’s Hannah Hidalgo pulled away with 27-points.
The Canes had three players in double figures for scoring and were led offensively by Amarachi Kimpson, setting her season high in scoring with 21 points. Ahnay Adams followed with 17 points and Ra Shaya Kyle closed out with 15 to complement her 10 rebounds, recording her thirteenth double-double of the season.
Miami now stands at 11–8 overall and 3–5 in ACC play, while the Fighting Irish hold a combined 13-6 record and are 5-3 in ACC matchups.
The Canes came out strong offensively, posting a five-point lead within the first three minutes of play (7-2). The Fighting Irish answered with the next five points to even the score at 7–7, but Miami responded with a 9–1 run to take an eight-point advantage. The Canes later stretched the lead to as many as 12 (25-13) before closing the opening period ahead, 25–17. Kimpson led Miami with 12 points in the first quarter, knocking down all three of her attempts from beyond the arc. Kyle followed with eight points, while five Canes contributed to Miami’s eight rebounds.
The first two minutes of the second quarter were scoreless before Raviv attacked the paint and finished a reverse layup to push Miami’s lead back into double digits at 27–17. Notre Dame answered with a 12–2 run of its own, knotting the game at 29–29. Coming out of the media timeout, Miami tallied 10 of the next 12 points to regain the advantage at 39-31. The Canes held the advantage for the remainder of the half, heading into the break with a 41–36 lead.
At halftime, Miami held the edge on the boards, out-rebounding Notre Dame 17–9, while shooting an efficient 57.1 percent from the field, nine percent higher than the Fighting Irish (48.1%). The Canes also forced seven turnovers and dished out seven assists in the opening half to lead over the Fighting Irish for more than 18 minutes.
Notre Dame scored the first nine points of the third quarter and held UM scoreless for upwards of three minutes to gain its first lead of the game at 45-41. The Canes fought back against ND’s offensive momentum, eventually regaining the lead, 52-50 (3:02) and closing out the period ahead by two (56-54).
Miami secured the initial four points of the final period to increase its advantage by six (60-54). Once again, Notre Dame whittled that lead down to tie the score at 61-61, before stripping Miami’s lead with 6:04 left on the clock (63-61). Notre Dame dominated from that point forward, outscoring the Canes 20-10 in the fourth quarter to solidify a 74-66 win.
Miami will continue its road stretch Sunday evening in Dallas, Texas, taking on SMU. The matchup against the Mustangs is set to tipoff at 3 p.m. CT and will be available on ACCNX.
