W. Tennis Sweeps to Open 2026 Season

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team (1-0) started the season with a 7-0 shutout over the FGCU Eagles (2-1) on Wednesday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

Newcomers Ela Plosnik and Sebastianna Scilipoti earned the first doubles win over Sabarina Jaramillo and Ashley Matz, 6-3, on court three before Raquel Gonzalez and Dominika Podhajecka clinched the doubles point, 6-4, over June Bjork and Africa Burillo at the top court.

Playing out doubles, Maria Vargas and Daria Volosova fell 7-5 to Nora Svensson and Anjali Kotecha on court two.

Scilipoti earned the first singles win of the day after an impressive 6-2, 6-0 win over Jaramillo on court four, followed by a dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory from Volosova against Burillo, at the No. 6 spot.

Gonzalez, ranked No. 100 in the ITA Singles rankings, then clinched the match for Miami after a 6-4, 7-5 win over Svensson at the top court.

The final three courts played out as Podhajecka took down Kotecha, 0-6, 6-3, 6-2, on court five, Plosnik secured the 6-4, 7-6(4) victory against Matz on court three and Aely Arai won 6-3, 7-5 on court two to complete the sweep.

Miami will compete in ITA Kickoff Weekend in Durham, N.C., and face Duke on Saturday, Jan. 23.
