Kentucky Defeats Miami 64-48 in ACC-SEC Challenge
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s basketball team was defeated 64-48 by the No. 17/16 Kentucky Wildcats on Wednesday night in part of the ACC-SEC Challenge. The home contest marked the Canes third time facing a ranked opponent in the past two weeks.
Miami now holds a 5-3, 0-0 ACC record and Kentucky stands at 9-1, 0-0 SEC.
Miami tallied the first points of the contest with a driving layup from Ahnay Adams. The Canes then denied Kentucky a basket in back-to-back possessions to hold the lead for over two minutes. Shortly after, the Wildcats increased its offensive pressure putting Miami in foul trouble early to garner five points from the charity stripe. The score stood at 16-13 in favor of Kentucky heading into the second period.
The Canes continued to find their footing in the second quarter, earning the lead at 18-16 (7:40). From there the score remained within a margin of three and was knotted twice (18-18, and 21-21). With 40 seconds left in the first half Kentucky pulled away by five (26-21) before Kyle saw the free throw line, sinking both shots to get Miami within one possession (26-23) heading into the locker room at half.
Coming out for the second half, Kentucky went on a 13-5 run to gain its first double digit lead of the game at 39-28. Following their first timeout of the third quarter, Miami had two consecutive turnovers, allowing the Wildcats to increase its advantage even further. Despite being down 17 points (45-28), the Canes continued to rally and close in on the scoring gap. Miami trailed by 12 (50-38) entering the final period of play.
The Wildcats continued to control the game for the final 10 minutes of play. Miami shot a game low 18.2 percent (2-11) from the field and was out-rebounded 9-6 by Kentucky. The final score stood in favor of the Wildcats at 64-48.
Miami will return to Watsco on Sunday at 2 p.m. and tipoff against Georgia State. The Saturday matinee will be streamed on ACCNX.
