Miami’s Final Push Falls Short in 64–61 Setback to No. 19 Iowa

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s basketball team fell 64-61 on Saturday night against the No. 19 Iowa Hawkeyes. The Canes had three players in double figures for scoring, but it wasn’t enough to lift them over Iowa in game two of the WBCA Showcase. Miami now stands at 4-1, 0-0 ACC and the Hawkeyes extend their win streak to 6-0, 0-0 B10.

Miami was led in scoring by Amarachi Kimpson with 19 points, setting her season high. Ra Shaya Kyle followed with 17 points, and Vittoria Blasigh closed out in double digits for Miami with 11. Kyle also led on the defensive end with eight of Miami’s 29 rebounds.

As a unit, the Canes shot 38.6 percent from the field (22-57), converted 11 of their 20 layup attempts, and forced 16 turnovers on Iowa.

Despite winning the jump ball, Miami was tested early as Iowa posted the first six points of the matchup. Amarachi Kimpson was the initiator for the Canes, scoring Miami’s first four points to get the game within one possession (6-4). The Hawks maintained control for the majority of the first quarter with its largest lead standing at eight (12-4). Miami then increased its scoring efficiency going on a six-point run to close out the quarter and shrink their deficit to one (14-13).

For the second consecutive game, Miami entered period two with the disadvantage. The Canes trailed 14-13 to the Hawks and continued to find good looks on the offensive end but were unable to capitalize. Miami shot a season low 16.7 percent (1-6) from the field in the initial four minutes, forcing Coach Cullop to call a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Canes left Iowa scoreless for upwards of two minutes allowing Miami to start closing back in at 24-19. The free throw line kept Miami within reach, shooting 80 percent (8-10) from the charity stripe.

Going into the locker room at half Iowa held the lead over the Canes at 36-28. Miami shot 32.1 percent from the field and only posted two buckets from behind the arc (2-11). Kimpson led Miami in scoring with nine points and Kyle led on the boards, bringing in four of the Canes’ 14 rebounds.

Kyle and Raviv set the tone for Miami in the third quarter. Kyle recorded Miami’s first six points of the half and Raviv distributed three assists. Kimpson was also a key factor for the Canes, posting five points to contribute to Miami’s third quarter total of 18. At the end of period three, Kyle led on both ends of the floor with 10 points and three rebounds. The score stood in favor of Iowa at 55-46 entering the final period of play.

In the final 10 minutes of play Miami got the game within four points for the first time since the second quarter (61-57). Kyle then closed the gap even further with a driving layup and two minutes on the clock (61-59). The game stayed within one possession for the remainder of play until Iowa was sent to the charity stripe with 11 seconds on the clock. The Hawkeyes sunk both free throws before returning to the line once more and closing out 64-61 over Miami.

Miami will first take on George Washington, Friday Nov. 28 at 1:30 p.m. ET, followed by a Saturday morning matchup at 11 a.m. against Oklahoma State.
