Hurricanes Conclude Homestand, Defeating Owls 79-47

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s basketball team (3-0, 0-0 ACC) defended Watsco Center on Thursday night, taking down Florida Atlantic (2-1, 0-0 AAC) 79-47 in their final November home contest.

Miami had three players in double figures for scoring as Amarachi Kimpson led all scorers with a season high 14 points. As a team, the Hurricanes shot 54.2 percent from the field and forced 13 turnovers on the Owls.

Jessica Peterson led in rebounds for the Canes, securing nine on the boards to complement her nine points. Overall Miami out-rebounded FAU 48-20, with all thirteen active players bringing in one or more rebounds.

Gal Raviv opened the scoring column with a three-point jumper giving the Canes an immediate lead over the Owls. From there Miami extended its advantage with Amarachi Kimpson and Natalie Wetzel each posting six points to contribute 12 of Miami’s first quarter total of 24. Overall Miami closed out the initial 10 minutes of play shooting 71.4 percent (10-14) from the field, earning a 24-9 lead and outrebounding FAU 14-3.

Florida Atlantic increased its defensive pressure at the start of the second quarter, holding the Canes to only seven points in the first five minutes. Miami also struggled from the field shooting 6-of-17 for a game low 35.3 percent, but remained diligent on the boards, outrebounding FAU once more 11-8. Despite the slower second quarter start, Miami maintained the lead at 42-23 to conclude the first half.

The Canes showed a renewed offensive spirit in the second half, shooting a game high 80 percent (8-10) from the field, with seven players contributing to the scoreboard. Three of Miami’s five freshmen posted a bucket in the third quarter, lifting the Canes to a 61-35 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

In the fourth quarter Miami forced eight turnovers on FAU, its most of the contest and brought in an additional 16 rebounds. The Canes were led in scoring by Gal Raviv in the fourth, posting five of her game total 12 points to mark her second game in double digits for scoring. With the home victory, Miami now extends their win streak to three.
