Miami Throttles Stetson, 78-53

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Jasmyne Roberts dropped a game-high 13 points, Haley Cavinder chipped in 12, Cameron Williams recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and the University of Miami Women’s Basketball team (1-0) outscored Stetson (0-1) 46-28 in the second half en route to a commanding 78-53 victory over the Hatters to commence the 2024-25 campaign.

“I’m just really proud of this group,” said Head Coach Tricica Cullop. “It’s a joy to coach them, and I’m excited to see where we are going, because I think we did some good things today but the ceiling for this team is really high, and I can’t wait to keep helping them reach their potential.”

The Hurricanes controlled the glass, outrebounding Stetson 58-36 throughout the contest. The 58 rebounds by Miami marked the most that they have recorded in a game since December 2019. Miami also dominated the paint, as they outscored Stetson 40-26 in the lane.

The Canes recorded 13 assists on 27 made field goals, and 10 different players scored at least two points in the game for the Canes, including six different players scoring eight or more points. 

Roberts was sensational off the bench for Miami, reaching 16 points on an efficient 6-10 shooting from the field, including 2-4 from behind the arc. Roberts also pulled down six boards in the contest.

Williams had an exceptional debut for the Canes after joining the program this past offseason, as she posted the fourth double-double of her career with a 10-point, 10-rebound outing. 

Haley Cavinder was highly impressive in her first game back with Miami after taking last season off, as she finished second among all scorers in the contest with 12 points, in addition to pulling down eight rebounds.

Hanna Cavinder also had a strong outing for the Canes, as she scored nine points on 3-8 shooting from the field, while also dishing out a game-high five assists and recording two steals. Hanna Cavinder completed the contest with a game-high plus/minus of +34. 

Natalija Marshall put together a dominant performance on the glass for Miami, pulling down a career-high 12 rebounds, four of which came on the offensive glass. Marshall also tallied two steals and blocked one shot. 

Highly-touted freshman Ahnay Adams earned the start in her first collegiate game and had a stellar outing for the Canes. Adams scored 10 points on 3-4 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line, while also grabbing eight rebounds throughout the contest.

Miami’s bench provided a tremendous boost, as they outscored the Hatters’ bench, 33-11. The Canes also managed to score 23 points off 16 Stetson turnovers.

Miami got off to a bit of a slow start, as they trailed Stetson 16-13 after the first quarter.

The Canes picked up their defensive intensity in the second quarter, recording multiple steals that they managed to turn into buckets on the other end of the court. After outscoring Stetson 19-9 in the quarter, the Canes entered halftime with a seven-point advantage, leading 32-25. 

Miami dominated the third quarter, as they expanded their lead to 15 points and entered the final quarter holding a 53-38 lead. 

The Canes commenced the final quarter with a 9-0 run, pushing their lead up to 24 points early in the stanza.  

Miami cruised for the remainder of the contest, going on to earn the 25-point victory over Stetson.

Notable Stats:

  • Miami knocked down 17-23 shots at the free throw line for a clip of 73.9 percent.
  • The Canes pulled down 58 rebounds throughout the game, marking the most that they have recorded in a contest since December 2019. 
  • Miami’s bench outscored Stetson’s bench, 33-11.
  • Miami compiled 14 offensive rebounds and scored 11 second chance points.
  • The Canes shot 58.1 percent from the field in the second half.
  • Miami had four different players reach double figures in scoring. 

The Canes will return to the court next Monday, Nov. 11, when they are slated to host Jacksonville at 7 p.m.
