CARY, N.C. – Four Hurricanes on the University of Miami women’s tennis team competed in the ITA All-American Championships this week.
Out of the combined 10 matches played, Miami walked out of the Cary Tennis Park with four wins.
Starting in the prequalifying draw, freshman Jacquelyn Ogunwale and juniors Xinyi Nong took the court on Saturday. Ogunwale got the day rolling, defeating Alice Amendola of Memphis, 6-4, 6-2. Following right behind, Nong battled Arizona’s Martyna Ostrzygalo, 7-5 6-3. Gonzalez came up short to TCU’s Tomi Main, 3-6, 1-6, to end day one.
Kicking off the second day, Gonzalez earned her first Miami win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Portland’s Sally Pethybridge, followed by back-to-back wins from Nong to enter the qualifying draw. Nong’s first win of the day came over 14-seeded Marisa Schmidt (Iowa), 6-1, 6-4, before taking the 6-4, 7-5 win against Wisconsin’s 17-seeded Alina Mukhortova.
The first day of qualifying wasn’t Miami’s day. After three impressive victories from Nong, she came up short after a 3-6, 4-6 loss to eight-seeded Sabine Rutlauka from Penn. Right after, Gonzalez and freshman Aely Arai battled in the qualifying doubles draw but fell 5-7, 4-6 to USC’s Parker Fry and Maia Sung.
On the final day for the Hurricanes, Nong fell short in the qualifying consolation match against Wisconsin’s Taylor Cataldi, 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 4-6, while Arai and Gonzalez dropped the 2-6, 6-3, [7-10] battle to Carolina Gomez Alonso and Olga Bienzobas from Arkansas.
Up next for the Hurricanes is a trip to Fort Myers, Fla., for the Bedford Cup, slated for Oct. 4-6 at FGCU.
