Swim / Dive Tops FIU, 216-81, in Season Opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The Miami Hurricanes swimming & diving team opened its season in impressive fashion Wednesday afternoon, besting visiting FIU, 216-81.

Among the highlights of the meet were an NCAA ‘B’ cut time from freshman Simone Moll in the 100-yard breaststroke, and a time from Giulia Carvalho in the 50-yard freestyle that was just one-tenth of a second (22.59) short of the standard in the event.

The Hurricanes’ top 200-yard medley relay entry set the tone for the dual meet, finishing in a first-place time of 1:40.89 at the Whitten Center Pool.

The Hurricanes posted individual wins in every event before the meet’s first break, including the first career win from freshman Marissa Inouye in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:06.84), to seize early control.

Veterans Savannah Barr (1:49.67) and Mary Kate Kelley (55.40) had the top times in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, respectively, while freshman Moll won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.00).

Evelyn Meggesto won the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.01), while Giulia Carvalho (22.66) took the top finish in the 50-yard freestyle (22.66) to continue momentum.

Mia VallĂ©e carried the hosts on the boards, sweeping both 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events. VallĂ©e took the 1-meter win (305.18) ahead of teammate Sheridan Smith (249.23 and won the 3-meter with a score of 318.23 ahead of FIU’s Av Osero (277.43).

Carvalho added a win in the 100-yard freestyle (50.28), while Kelley won the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.65).  Moll (200-yard breaststroke, 2:16.09) and Inouye (4:57.86) picked up the second individuals win of the meet in the final stages, while Carvalho (100-yard butterfly, 54.74) won her third event.

After a victory from Emma Sundstrand in the 200-yard IM (2:04.11), Miami’s top entry in the 400-yard freestyle relay capped the event with a winning time of 3:26.97.

Miami continues its season at the SMU Classic in Dallas, Texas on Oct. 11.
